During the second quarter of 2015 (from April to June 2015), 213 200 first time asylum seekers applied for protection in the European Union (EU), up by 15% compared with the first quarter of 2015 and by 85% compared with the second quarter of 2014, reported Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Relocation of 40 000 refugees from Greece and Italy agreed by Council. The Council adopted a decision establishing provisional measures in the area of international protection for the benefit of Italy and Greece. This decision establishes a temporary and exceptional relocation mechanism over two years from the frontline member states Italy and Greece to other member states.
