Situation of Roma in this region is very difficult; they are poor, discriminated against, at risk of racist attacks, and practically excluded from social trends, due to which Roma integration is a priority to European Commission, said Luca Manunta Programme Manager of the EU Delegation to Serbia on the occasion of granting the European Commission’s Roma integration award to a Serbian project.
Having recognized that Ebola “represents and unprecedented crisis which requires an unprecedented response,” the Foreign Affairs Council concluded the need to make an increased effort fighting it, EU High Representative Catherin Ashton said following the meeting in Luxembourg. U Delegation to Serbia, EU Info Centre in Belgrade and EU Info Point in Nis will mark European Anti-Trafficking Day, 18 October, by organising numerous activities aimed at raising public awareness on the issue of human trafficking, possibilities of prevention and helping the victims.
More gas will continue to be delivered to homes and companies if EU member states cooperate and allow the market forces to work as long as possible, a Gas Stress test report presented by the European Commission showed. Serbia, along with Finland, Estonia, Bosnia and Macedonia to be the most affected in case of a prolonged supply disruption.
During the years 2010-2012, EU Member States registered 30 146 victims of trafficking in human beings. Behind this number are human tragedies, broken hopes and destroyed plans for a better life. During the same period, 8 551 prosecutions against traffickers were reported across the EU. 80 percent of victims of trafficking were female, and over 1 000 child victims were registered as trafficked for sexual exploitation. This data is part of a statistical report on victims and perpetrators of trafficking released today by the European Commission. A report also shows that many concrete measures against this severe human rights violation have been undertaken during 2010-2014, such as better cooperation with civil society, and guidelines issued to border authorities and other stakeholders on how to better identify victims.
The EU-funded assistance for flood relief continues as planned in order to help as many people from affected areas as possible to prepare for the forthcoming winter. In addition, the reconstruction of the lower level of Agricultural and Chemistry School in Obrenovac is successfully completed on Friday, 17 October 2014.
European Union Information Point in Novi Sad and Vojvodina Chamber of Commerce organised a conference “Economic and structural reforms in Serbia in the light of Progress Report on Serbia.”
Under the EU-funded project “We are here together – European support for Roma inclusion”, modular trainings for pedagogical assistants working at primary schools and preschool institutions across Serbia were held from 6-11 and from 13-17 October in Kanjiza, Belgrade, Smederevo, Leskovac and Nis.
Head of the Delegation of European Union to Serbia Michael Davenport was awarded the highest municipal recognition – Ljubostinja Rosette – on the occasion of Day of the Municipality of Trstenik. He was awarded this prestigious recognition for an outstanding contribution in coordination of organisations engaged in providing assistance to the Municipality of Trstenik after May floods.
