OASIS – EU support for development of youth and sports tourism in Kistelek and Kanjiza

The development of health, youth and sports tourism in border area municipalities of Kanjiza, Serbia and Kistelek, Hungary is the main goal of the project OASIS Kistelek – Kanjiza complementary touristic development based on natural resources as interconnected diverse elements of the regional tourist system. The project, worth around EUR499,000, is co-funded by the EU under IPA Interreg Hungary-Serbia CBC programme 2014-2020.

The idea is to promote tourism potential of the border area through development and diversity of tourism offer. Reconstruction of sports facilities, construction of multipurpose sports pitch and hosting of a summer camp for students from 16 different high schools in Vojvodina are among project activates. Also, there is a plan to establish a health counselling and medical treatment centre in Kistelek.

As he presented the project at the Assembly of Vojvodina, Vice-President of the Provincial Government/Provincial Secretary of Education, Regulations, Administration and National Minorities-National Communities Mihalj Njilas said that the project contributed to strengthening of ties between people in Serbia and Hungary, especially in the border area.

“The project serves to promote culture and tourism in the Danube region and apart from the tourism component, the project is focused on the youth as one of our major resources. Their participation in sports and education activities will contribute to furthering of project’s goals and promotion of interethnic tolerance and understanding,“ he said.

Alongside the leading partner – Provincial Secretariat of Education, Regulations, Administration and National Minorities-National Communities – the project is implemented by the Municipality of Kanjiza and the European Affairs Fund of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the Municipality of Kestelek, Csongrad County, Hungary.
